UNDERSTAND IT VISUALLY
Give every sample a purpose.
Prototype, fit and pre-production samples answer different questions. Stage names vary; agree purpose and approval criteria.
Keep the approved sample, BOM and written spec aligned.
Concept or prototype sample
Review whether the design direction and key construction can be realized. Record material substitutions clearly if final materials are not yet available.
Fit and material samples
Check measurements, ease, mobility, layer compatibility, hand feel, fill distribution, quilting, trims and color against the brief. Send consolidated comments with annotated images and measurements.
Pre-production approval
Confirm final materials, labels, workmanship, measurement tolerances, packing and inspection criteria. The approved sample, tech pack and BOM should match. Freeze changes or document them before bulk.
Questions buyers ask
What does a pre-production sample prove?
It should reflect the agreed bulk materials and construction well enough for the buyer to approve production readiness; define the scope for each project.
Can fit approval be given from photos?
Photos help review appearance, but fit and hand feel usually require physical samples and agreed measurement checks.
