UNDERSTAND IT VISUALLY
GSM measures mass per area.
A 1 m² piece with a mass of 100 g has a mass per area of 100 g/m². This is a unit example, not a product recommendation.
GSM alone does not state thickness or warmth.
Thickness needs a measuring condition.
The same batting can give different thickness readings under different loads. Record the measurement method and pressure.
Compare material data under matching conditions.
Check recovery after compression.
Inspect the sample before compression, under a defined load, and after a defined recovery period. The sequence illustrates a test plan.
Set the conditions; do not assume a recovery percentage.
GSM is not thickness
Two battings with the same mass per area may have different thickness or resilience because fiber structure, bonding and finish differ. Thickness readings depend on pressure, conditioning and measurement method.
Build a complete padding specification
Identify supplier article, fiber content, construction, mass per area, thickness method and target range, color, hand, recovery expectation, care condition and intended garment zones. Ask the supplier which test methods apply.
Validate in the jacket
The shell, lining, quilting and seam pressure affect loft and appearance. Test a representative garment after relevant compression, handling or laundering rather than assuming the roll specification predicts the finished result.
Questions buyers ask
Does higher GSM always mean warmer?
Not reliably across different constructions and materials. Compare the specific product and test evidence.
Can I quote thickness without a method?
Avoid that. Record the measurement conditions and method so supplier results can be compared.
